Nissan is set to unveil an all-electric minivan concept at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and the electric vehicle (EV) landscape. While minivans have lost some popularity to crossovers and SUVs, the introduction of an all-electric minivan hints at the segment’s potential for revival. EV technology offers unique packaging possibilities, enabling greater flexibility in design.
The Nissan Hyper Tourer concept demonstrates this versatility, boasting a spacious cabin with a flat floor. This achievement is attributed to Nissan’s EV Technology Vision, which reimagines the packaging of components and solid-state batteries to create an “ultra-low” center of gravity. This not only enhances the vehicle’s stability but also provides ample space for various applications, including a modern camper van.
The automotive industry is increasingly exploring the idea of all-electric campers, seizing the potential of EV packaging. Volkswagen announced its plan to develop a camper version of the ID. Buzz all-electric van, while Winnebago introduced an all-electric camper van concept based on the Ford E-Transit.
The interior of the Nissan Hyper Tourer concept is designed to facilitate communication and comfort. Front seats swivel 360 degrees, enabling conversations among passengers in different rows. Rear-seat passengers can control navigation and audio via a wearable display. The cabin features an overhead console with traditional Japanese patterns, and the floor incorporates a flat LED panel displaying serene images of a riverbed and the sky.
Furthermore, the concept incorporates an artificial intelligence (AI) system that monitors biometric signs, adjusting mood lighting and music based on real-time data, including brain waves, breathing, perspiration, and heart rate.
While specific details about the powertrain are limited, Nissan confirms the presence of its e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system and all-solid-state batteries. Notably, Nissan is not the only automaker exploring this solid-state battery technology; Toyota is also developing similar solutions.
The Nissan Hyper Tourer’s exterior design is characterized by striking sheet metal with sharp creases along the sides. The white waistline provides a visual separation between the body and the greenhouse. The sporty appearance is accentuated by the upright front end, raked windshield, and an integrated spoiler.
This all-electric minivan concept is part of Nissan’s presentation at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, scheduled to begin on October 25. In addition to the Hyper Tourer, Nissan has teased two other concepts, the Hyper Adventure and Hyper Urban, underscoring the brand’s commitment to innovation and the future of EVs.
