MAHLE SCT (Superior Continuous Torque) electric motors’ innovative cooling concept has garnered recognition by receiving the Top Innovator Award 2023 from the European Association of Automotive Suppliers (CLEPA), specifically in the ‘Green’ category. MAHLE, a technology group headquartered in Stuttgart, has introduced a groundbreaking oil cooling system for its electric motors, ensuring continuous high-output operation. This technological advancement significantly boosts the performance of electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles, aligning with MAHLE’s 2030+ group strategy focused on electrification.
Arnd Franz, Chairman of the MAHLE Management Board and CEO, expressed the significance of this achievement, stating, “This award is very special for us as it shows that we can set new technology benchmarks in e-mobility with our innovations. MAHLE is continuing to grow with electrification.”
The SCT electric motor from MAHLE stands out as it currently boasts the longest-lasting electric motor in its class. Test results indicate its ability to consistently deliver between 93% and 100% of its peak power.
What sets this technology apart is the exceptional ratio between continuous output and peak power, which enables the use of electric vehicles under demanding conditions. Notably, it addresses challenges such as steep road gradients for electric trucks and the multiple accelerations required for battery electric passenger cars. Until now, electric motors have only partially covered these scenarios.
This achievement is attributed to the innovative integrated oil cooling system, which not only enhances the motor’s durability but also repurposes waste heat within the vehicle’s overall system. The SCT electric motor distinguishes itself through its compact design, offering advantages in terms of materials and weight. Its lightweight nature requires less material during manufacturing and increases the potential net load in commercial vehicles.
Furthermore, MAHLE has unveiled a comprehensive technology kit for electric motors that combines the strengths of the SCT electric motor with the MCT (Magnet-free Contactless Transmitter) electric motor, which is also considered a benchmark in the field. This modular system, referred to as the “perfect motor,” delivers consistently high peak power, wear-free power transmission, the elimination of rare earth materials, and exceptional efficiency. Arnd Franz emphasized the versatility of this technology toolbox, offering tailored electrification solutions for various vehicle classes, applications, and brand philosophies.
