YouTube Unveils Numerous New Features and Design Updates
In a substantial update, YouTube is rolling out approximately 36 new features and design changes across its web app, smartphone app, and smart TV software. Although none of these updates are groundbreaking individually, they collectively enhance the user experience.
For those who can’t get enough of fast-paced video content, YouTube now makes it easier to increase playback speed. Users can simply press and hold on a video, and it will automatically shift to 2x playback speed. This feature facilitates faster content scanning and is available on web browsers, tablets, and mobile devices.
The YouTube app is introducing larger preview thumbnails to improve navigation, along with haptic feedback that vibrates when hovering over the original starting point to ensure viewers never lose their place. This feature is particularly helpful when using the app on smartphones or tablets, as the current navigation method can be.
A noteworthy addition is a lock screen tool designed to prevent accidental interruptions while watching videos on mobile devices. This feature will be particularly useful for those who enjoy watching content while walking or exercising, ensuring that unintentional taps don’t disrupt the viewing experience.
To address audio fluctuations, YouTube has finally added a stable volume feature that keeps video loudness consistent. This feature is automatically enabled after updating the app.
The library tab has undergone a refresh and is now referred to as “You.” It provides access to previously watched videos, playlists, downloads, and purchases, all within a single location. This change affects both web and mobile app users.
Additional updates are primarily related to design enhancements, such as visual cues when creators prompt viewers to subscribe and animations that follow view and like counts during a video’s first 24 hours. The smart TV app also receives updates, including a vertical menu, video chapters, a scrollable description section, and more.
This update is being rolled out in stages, and YouTube anticipates that it may take a few weeks to reach all users worldwide. The streaming platform promises more features in the future, including a redesign of the YouTube Kids app.
YouTube has been consistently evolving its core features, introducing enhancements like 1080p playback for web users and AI-enhanced creator tools over the past year. The social media landscape is in a state of transformation, and YouTube remains committed to adapting to these changes.
