Join Us for International Observe the Moon Night at NASA Goddard’s Visitor Center
The public is cordially invited to participate in the celebration of International Observe the Moon Night on Saturday, October 21, from 6 to 9 p.m. EDT, regardless of the weather, at NASA Goddard’s Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide event that brings together Moon enthusiasts and inquisitive individuals from across the globe. It’s an opportunity for the public to delve into the realms of lunar science and exploration, partake in celestial observations, and pay homage to their cultural and personal ties with the Moon.
During the event at Goddard, attendees will have the chance to engage in a multitude of interactive hands-on activities. This includes creating your eclipse art, investigating rocks from both Earth and space, reenacting the phases of the Moon using cookies, designing your lunar lander, and much more. A photo booth, Moon-themed presentations, and lunar and astronomical observations with telescopes will also be available.
International Observe the Moon Night takes place annually in September or October, aligning with the time when the Moon is in its first-quarter phase, making it perfect for evening observations. During the first quarter, the Moon provides excellent viewing opportunities along the terminator, where shadows accentuate the lunar landscape’s craters.
The event is made possible through the sponsorship of NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission and the Solar System Exploration Division of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, with support from numerous partners. LRO is managed by Goddard on behalf of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
